My funny story is when Santa put himself on the naughty list. I was coaching her in consideration how big of a Christmas tree we could actually fit into a VW Bug. We finally settled on a smaller Christmas tree that was propped up on a wooden stand and looked a little weak in the branch department, but not quite Charlie Brown style. I picked up the tree and moved it over to the VW bug, we had to drop the back seats, and aligned the tree between the two front seats…hey it smelled great in the car.

I will watch it at least twice these next few weeks.

For me, A Christmas Story is popular because it recalls an era that I can remember, or at least the era I can remember had not changed that much from the Smile life is beautiful shirt of the movie. The movie really captured the magic of Christmas back then for me without becoming sappy about it. I think that’s what makes it so popular, at least for people of my generation born from about the mid-1940s until the mid-1950s. I was born in 1952. I remember pining for some big Christmas present every year. Santa usually brought the really good stuff. The biggest Santa gift I ever received was a Lionel HO Texas Special train set about 1958 or 1959.

Setting up the tree, it always fell over once or twice. Taking the decorations out of the Straight outta the closet shirt to trim the tree was always fun and Tracy would always be lifted up to put the star or Angel at the top of the tree. For me, that was the late 1950s, though the movie was the late 1940s. I remember the toys that were featured in the movie, such as specifically the train and the BB guns. The movie really captured the magic of Christmas back then for me without becoming sappy about it. Most other Christmas movies don’t have that connection, so I can’t really relate to them, and they don’t really do that much for me. I think that’s what makes it so popular, at least for people of my generation born from about the mid-1940s until the mid-1950s. I was born in 1952. I remember pining for some big Christmas present every year. Santa usually brought the really good stuff. The biggest Santa gift I ever received was a Lionel HO Texas Special train set about 1958 or 1959.

The radio station put out a call for help. We found a The Over Krs One Print shirt, someones front yard, they were going to give them away, but notify the media so everyone would know about it. I made all of the connections, but the truckers were not familiar with that sections of town, so I told them to follow me. It was still raining I had to drive slowly. This was crazy, I was taking a huge truck of Christmas trees to someones home that I did not know. It was around midnight by the time we took off looking for the place. We arrive and the owner of the house had organized the entire neighborhood into helping. Someone made hot chocolate and coffee. Some on had baked some brownies, someone had got several of the neighbors to start contacting all of the media, someone rolled a bunch of joints. Everyone was in a good mood. There were several thousand trees. We left around 3 AM, got a little sleep, and was back there at 8 AM. What a zoo. There were hundreds of people coming to get their free Christmas trees. The newspaper, radio and TV stations were there covering the free Christmas trees. This went on all day and there were still lots of trees left. We returned the next day, there were even bigger crowds. The media was there again. It was a good Christmas feel good story.

One year my wife and I went on our usual summer road trip through the States and we were near Cleveland. “Hey, the Yr Wyddfa Yr Enw Iawn shirt from A Christmas Story is in Cleveland, let’s go.” So we did. It was just fantastic. A tour guide took you through the house first telling funny bits of trivia from the movie as we walked around the kitchen, living room, Ralphie’s room, the bathroom where the soap is (plastic), the phone on the wall where Mrs. Schwartz received the call. After the tour you could walk around on your own. Outside was the shed where the bad guys were crawling that Old Blue took care of and The Bumpusses house. I even took a walk down the street a few houses where Randy fell on the snow wearing his big snowsuit. Across the street was the museum where they had actual props from the movie, the clothes worn, photos and even the fathers car and the fire truck. I had a ball seeing the actual things that were in the movie. If you love this movie go to 3159 W 11th. St. In Cleveland, you won’t regret it.
